This is where my indoor plant journey began. My husband brought this guy home from work. He had been abandoned by someone who moved away. At some point someone had picked him up by his stem and put him back in his pot at at an almost-sideways angle. He didn't look heathy. My husband brought him home because he thought I might want the pot. I repotted him, delt with his scale, and named him Planty. It's been a few years now, and he prefers to be outside in indirect light in the summer, and struggles through the indoor winters. Last year I had to cut him back to fit him in the house. This year he has grown so big I don't think he will fit in my house at all. He was about 18 inches in an 8 inch pot when I got him and now he's about 5 1/2 feet tall in a five gallon pot. I'm wondering if he can live outside on a covered porch in zone 9b.

If it's in a sheltered location, it should hopefully be OK. You could consider covering it with a sheet on extremely cold and frosty nights.

I agree with covering it. Mine are both outside and on frost nights I cover my babies because they will lose all their leaves. They will grow back in spring. But it’s better to cover it. Over bring them in to a covered location. We have a covered patio I put all my outside plants under in winter.
