I was hoping to get a second opinion on my plant. It was thriving for several months. I recently moved it to try to give it more sun but my house doesn’t produce much light. I noticed some of the leaves at the bottom were black and dead so I figured out that it’s sensitive to hard water. Unfortunately I live in an area where it’s all hard water. I took it upon myself to boil some water but like an idiot who knows nothing about plants poured boiling water right into the center of the stem AND the soil. This is how it looked next day. Is this plant dead? I learned a good lesson here but I’m quite sad that I potentially killed it. Let me know what you think and if you have any plant recommendations for shady areas that would be awesome as well. Thanks!

Whoopsies! 😅 Well this isn’t going to make you feel any better but…. boiling water isn’t going to make it less hard. In fact, when steam evaporates the water left behind will have an even higher concentration of minerals. Good news though, if you still see green then there’s still hope! I would chop of anything that’s totally fried or gone mushy. The stem of this plant will put out a new growth point if the crown is cut off. If some of the boiling water got in the soil, I suppose it would probably be best to repot the plant. Remove any mushy roots so they don’t cause root rot for the surviving roots. Good luck! 🍀

Oh I see. Is there a way around hard water that is cheap? Thanks for the tips!

Hmm I’m not sure. I haven’t needed to yet, but I think I’ve heard some people use a Brita filter

You can also just collect rainwater

Doh! Try API stress coat. 1 drop per gallon of water. Also you can just buy distilled water.

We have hard water here in Utah. I store water in bottles and let them sit overnight and longer.

I started using an RV/marine water filter for my plants since most of them are out on my patio. It connects to a regular garden hose and an outdoor faucet. It’s about $26 for a 2 pack of filters for 6 months total usage in an RV/boat before they need replacing. I haven’t used it long to know if they will last 3 months each. It is better than me carry gallons of distilled water every week since I have too many plants.
