Your watermelon pepperomia is so cuuuute!!! šš Iāve had this in my wish list for forever now.
1 gillaGot her for $8 off Etsy. Her nameās Wanda. If you ever get your hands on one, Iāve found mine likes drying out completely before watering, and they often come in straight up peat moss, but adding a chunky mix seems to be better. Theyāre more prone to overwatering and edema cause of the succulent nature of their leaves, so I ended up adding perlite and some of my cactus mix to the moss, and itās done quite well since. Hope you find one!
1 gillaOhhhhh good tip thank you!!! I saw one at a nursery a couple months ago but she was the last one and looking poorly so I decided to pass bc Iām still a new-ish plant mum so didnāt have the skills to rehab a plant.
1 gillaNo problem! I recently found a peperomia albovittata/peperomia rana verde at my local PET STORE of all places š they had a lovely tropical plant selection for reptile and amphibian enclosures. I wouldnāt suggest buying one online, as I learned it was a miracle mine survived the trip (they donāt do well being shipped, again, because of the edema risk), but you might find one in the unlikeliest of places. Probably not a PetSmart, but if youāve got an exotic pets store around you, maybe try there
1 gillaAnd if youāre new to peperomia is general, I highly suggest starting with one of the obtusifolia variety. Iāve got a variegated one that was $7 at my local nursery. Sheās been giving me new leaves every couple of weeks since I got her in May. Put her in some Espoma Organic All-Purpose mix and she has given me absolutely no trouble whatsoever. I never mist her, she doesnāt need a humidity tray, I bottom water her once every 8 days, and she sits in a north windowsill. Sheās gotta be one of my easiest plants, even more so than my succulents š. Iāve been dying to get a peperomia obtusifolia with the marble variegation, but yeah, I definitely suggest the obtusifolias. They seem considerably hardier than the more delicate peperomias (raindrop, pilea, watermelon, etc.) and due to the very succulent nature of their leaves, I almost treat it like a low-light succulent.
1 gillaOooooh interesting! I think youāre the second person I read today that found a plant at a pet store (the other was a tinke rubber plant) so Iāll def have to go check it out! Iām starting to see more places selling plants, I guess itās really caught on now as the āitā hobby to have
1 gillaAnd I love your red margin. As for repotting, I repotted mine when the lower leaves were a little squished, and it was difficult to see the soil. There was lots of new growth hidden in the center of the plant, so I gave her a larger pot to give her more space to spread out. She was originally in an oddly tall, glass-shaped 4-in pot, and I moved her to a 6-in pot. Iāll add some photos for comparison. If you want yours to have more space, your bottom leaves are covering the soil at the bottom, or you just wanna give it some more room to branch out, it should be quite happy if you repot it. I say keep the soil itās got and add some soil around it, since it looks quite happy. Mine didnāt go through any shock from the process, but if yours does, donāt stress unless it persists after a week
0 gillningarThank you! Heās been a happy little fellow! Heās been popping out new leaves that looks like shrekās ears form the movie so Iāve been calling him shrek lately. Heās starting to get a bit leggy at the top trying to get over his previous growth so maybe it is time for an up pot. I just tend to plunk them in the new pot and fill round the sides; Iām too scared to tease the root ball cuz I donāt want to stress out my plants! It def is hard to see the soil on him (tho rn heās suuuuuuuper easy to check if heās dry. I literally just pop off his nursery pot and look at his soil š¤£) Your variegated looks so healthy in her new home. A glass pot! Thatās unusual for a nursery pot! May she have so much more new growth now that she can stretch a bit!
1 gillaYours definitely looks like it could handle a repot. Try something about 2-in larger in diameter than the first pot. And it was in a plastic pot, but literally shaped like one of those fast food plastic cups. Never seen one shaped like that. I literally put her in my cup holder for the ride home š aside from the weird shape, her roots were fine, and I believe these donāt mind getting a bit rootbound, similar to succulents, so definitely donāt fool with the root ball. Just add some soil around the sides like you said. And PLEASE avoid miracle grow if you can. That stuff is a plant killer, especially for succulents and succulent like plants, and ESPECIALLY in humid climates. That stuff has way too much peat and WILL kill a peperomia if it stays wet for too long. Iāve heard good things about FoxFarm too if you canāt find Espoma. Good luck with Shrek! (And hope you find yourself a watermelon Peperomia! š)
1 gillaā¦. Uh ohā¦. Iāve been using miracle growā¦. BUT!!! Itās the tropical one and I do mix it with orchid bark and perlite about half soil /half bark-perlite and other then the gnats Iāve not had any problems. But Iām def going to switch after this bag. So Iāll look into Fox farm! My local home/depot/Canadian Tire/Lowes donāt have any other options and the plant nursery has terrible hours that makes it impossible to visit. Maybe for this repot Iāll add more perlite than I usually do to keep him airy. Thatās super funny you got yours in, essentially, a solo cup! I can just picture it now! š¤£š¤£š¤£ guess it made it convenient for transporting home tho!! Good she was in fair shape despite being root bound, sheās def glowed up since then!
