Just wanted to share a little story about the journey of this teeny weeny maidenhair cutting. I started this tiny cutting in water in Aug - it’s the mouldy stem in the little stein-shaped shot glass. In September I decided to repot it into LECA. I figured my other mature ferns transitioned fairly quickly so this little nub with its tiny roots might as well. Fast forward to 10 days ago and I saw it had its first shoot! And today, we have a second shoot and some leaves too! I love ferns so much! 😍😍😍

    I'm feeling many emotions rn, some of pride, and some of resentment since I kill almost every fern I get..

      I can relate in a big way. It’s not until I started dabbling in semi-hydro that I was able to stop murdering ferns. And now I can’t believe a piece as tiny as this is actually growing in my care. The first one I did was a slightly scraggly rabbits foot fern which has grown into this beautiful monster. Now I’m completely obsessed and accumulating a dangerous collection of baby ferns to see if I can turn them into their own little monsters eventually 😬😬😬 I recommend giving it a go! I have mine in both self watering pot with wick setup and also the classic inner pot in an outer cache pot and have really found no difference in success. If this is your first foray into semi-hydro, there’s a ton of info available on YT but the first method I tried for my now monster fern is the pumice method described by Swedish Plant Guys. After that I went down the LECA route because it’s so cheap here and easy to reuse. The LECA addict has great info on her website and the LECA queen on YouTube has very thorough explanations. Anyway good luck, I really think you can turn your luck around with ferns! 🌿🌿🌿
