Adopted this prayer plant off of Facebook from someone who was tired of it not improving. Any tips for saving it? It doesn't seem to have much of a root system, so any advice on propagation/next steps would be appreciated!

AmyMaybe some rooting hormone would encourage root growth. You can get a powdered rooting hormone at garden stores. I got a liquid version from Amazon

BbHi there, gorgeous plant and I’m sure you can revive it. How much effort are you wanting to go to? I’ll provide a couple of suggestions for what I would do for different levels of effort :) Minimal effort option: I personally would water propagate this cutting in water using distilled water. These babies don’t like the minerals we typically have in tap water and tend to get brown crispy leaves as a result if the tap water is particularly mineral rich in your area. Distilled water avoids this completely. You’ll need to change the water weekly at minimum. If you have a non-transparent vase or cup, that’s ideal as roots don’t like to be exposed to light. But do check on them every week to track progress. You really want for humidity to be above 50%. If your humidity is super low you might need to invest in a humidifier. Try clustering your plants together a bit - that could increase humidity adequately through just leaf transpiration when they’re all huddled together. And light - bright but indirect meaning, if the plant can see the sky out the window without having the sun directly hit those leaves, then it’ll be happy. Or supplement with a grow light. More effort: all of the above plus use add hydroponic nutrients to the water. I use Growth Technology Clonex Clone Solution as it’s a complete fertiliser and suitable for growing in water only. You can also add other amendments such as a monthly dose of root stimulant (I use GT Rootzone), mycorrhizae, fulvic acid, silica etc. If that’s too overwhelming, just get a hydroponic fertiliser. This will not be organic as organic if fertilisers require all the soil microbes and fungi etc to make the fertiliser bioavailable to the plant. I also use an air stone (aquarium pump thing that makes bubbles). Cheapy one from eBay works fabulously. You can also use a heat mat for cuttings. Just be careful and do your research about the proper way to use these. I personally don’t but other people do. As per the minimal effort routine, change the water weekly so that you keep a constant supply of oxygen in the water. If you’re using an air stone you obviously don’t need worry as much but keep that nutrient water topped up. Ok hope that helps! Let me know if you have any questions :) 🌿🌿🌿

Thank you so much for the detailed response!! I will look into getting a hydroponic fertilizer. Right now I have a plastic dome over the water prop jar to increase humidity :)
