Does anyone have experience growing a Calathea in water? I tried to rescue this one from Walmart and she just isn’t happy. I have some maranta growing really well in water so I’m considering trying that but I’m a little nervous.

JayIm growing mine in leca right now, but it originally was growing in water for quite some time, the way i did it was i took propogations of the branches and let them grow water roots so there wasnt any chance of rot. If you want to transition to water, youd have to really get as much dirt off the roots as possible and keep an eye out that it doesnt rot, mine seems super happy and thriving now though!

Thank you. How do you propagate the stems? I don’t see any nodes like I do on my marantas.

They can only be propagated by seperating the plant, for calatheas i transitioned them into water by cutting most of the dirt roots off and washing thoroughly and letting them callus and then putting into the leca, id suggest even taking ur nail and scrubbing off mosr of the black covering on the roots aswell, for prayer plants i just propogated, they didnt take long to propogate i saw roots in about 5 days

Idk if youve researched leca a lot but i made the mistake of not boiling/ thoroughly washing my leca and it grew mold so just in case u dont know id suggest boiling them for 10-15 minutes before using it bc of the residue on the outside of the pebbles

You can get away with not cutting off the roots but i do it as a precaution bc i hate dealing with rot lol
