i’m totally inexperienced with this plant (impulse buy in march). i just learned today that they’re sensitive to hard water, too much light(?), and low humidity. 😩 so did i speed up an inevitable death or is she just being dramatic? what exactly causes the leaves to curl upwards like this?

Leaf curling is usually a low humidity issue (unless it’s a new leaf unfurling). I’m in the same boat as you where my house is super low in humidity but calatheas are my favourite plant haha. I will say though that my calatheas are doing pretty good a few weeks on despite everyone saying they are super difficult, so try not to stress too much, they aren’t doomed to die!

Swedish plantguys on YouTube has a super informative video on how to identify Calathea problems which really helped me (skip to around 20 mins if you don’t have time for the full video) he mentions leaf curling issues too and how to test the reason for the curling :-) it’s called “All you need to know about Calathea”

So cute! I moved mine away from the light and it’s started to grow. I was shocked. I don’t have a humidifier around mine. Mine is a lemon lime and thriving as long as I leave her alone, in the same spot and use filtered water. I had to do pest control (Bonide) on all my plants because of an Alocasia I brought home from the grocery store had thrips and I had two leaves turn yellow. They are super sensitive. Mine likes Superthrive vitamins, she didn’t complain and I had some growth. I potted up about a month ago in Molly’s mix (tropical mix) and had growth. I use clear nursery pots and then a cover pit so I can monitor the roots. I think you’ll be fine once you figure out a good spot. Use the Planta app light monitor and find a shade or part sun part shade spot. Good luck 🍀
