Hey everyone! Forgive my ignorance. Just jumped both feet in on plant parenthood. Been buying a lot of plants in the past few weeks (18 to be exact) from pathos, dragon tree plants, nerve plant, snake, money tree, zz, and just got a dieffenbachia. I also have a 10 year old, reasonably well behaved Husky. Question (may be dumb) are any of these plants that are considered toxic, should be a concern if she doesn't actually chew/consume these plants? Does being near any plant in particular cause some sort of reaction or harm from mere contact (like poison ivy) or am I being a bit too paranoid now? Thanks for the responses in advance! 😀

    Well some of them are going to be toxic when consumed but not upon contact. I have a golden retriever and I own all those plants. And he seems unbothered. But just taking extra precautious, when you prune the plants, keep the dog away from it. You will be fine

    Most of what you have is toxic. Dragon Tree - Yes String of hearts - Yes Philodendron - Yes Bamboo - Yes Pothos - Yes Ginseng Ficus - Yes ZZ Plant - Yes Snake Plant - Yes Dieffenbachia - Yes most are an issue os Oxalates, but some Saponins and enzymes. Nerve Plants - No Parlor Palm - No Money Tree - No

      There isn't an issue with the husky touching them, though if say it broke a branch on a few of these and the sap got into the eyes/nose/mouth it would be irritating.

      With that said if she randomly decided to have a snack, a few of these she'd probably need a vet visit.

    I agree with what Wolfen said. Some toxic plants can be irritating for us to touch, so just wash your hands afterwards. Make sure all droppings are picked up so the dog doesn't get curious and try to eat. When I repot I have to do it in a separate area because my dogs are too nosy, so you might want to consider that too when the time comes.

    Unfortunately I’ve learned that a lot of the “cool” looking plants are not pet safe. If you are looking for recommendations on pet safe plants let me know I have a ton!

      Haha it's a shame! I haven't seen any issues with her yet. And she's old/mature enough not to chew on any of these plants. Just wasn't sure if having them around in general could affect them. However, I am interested in knowing what plans you recommend!

      My older cat couldn’t care less, my younger boy is a muncher lol. Seems like you like foliage style plants, highly recommended pileas, peperomias, calatheas, Hoyas and prayer plants. Most succulents are also pet safe, but with every plant always do a quick google search before you buy. The only succulent I’ve come across that is not pet safe is a jade plant.

    I found out over Christmas that my cat is allergic to Poinsettia pollen. She had massive sneezing fits and watery eyes. Other than that, I don’t know of any houseplants that are harmful simply by being present.

      I agree with this about pollen being an issue. Certain plants will release pollen that can irritate the respiratory track of animals. This would only be an issue if you have those types of plants and then only when they’re flowering. Peace lilies are one of the plants whose pollen can cause irritation.
