How do you deter your cats from eating your plants? I really want to move some plants into my actual house (they’re in a closed off sunroom) but I just know my cats would chomp on them. (I would only bring in non toxic ones just to be safe)

send_nodesGood question haha! My cat only really messes with things when they’re new, but once the novelty wears off, she doesn’t care. So I let her check out any new plants while I’m watching. Usually she just sniffs them, sometimes tries to smack the leaves lol. Then she’s over it. But every cat is different so it’s hard to say

mothmanstolemyvapePretty much all my plants are toxic to cats so I just keep them up very high on shelves they absolutely can’t get to or stands. Luckily they’re not interested in any of them. I do grow a couple pots of catnip and cat grass and they only go after “their plants”. If I ever see them spending too much time looking at the others I deter by giving them one of theirs. Definitely depends on the cat and their personality though. Mine are super chill and not total chaos goblins lol

Succulent❤️MamaHow old are your cats? I think that makes a huge difference too. My family has 3 five year old cats and a 1 year old cat. They sleep in my kids rooms so no plants in there. Even fake ones got chewed up when they were kittens 🤪 but now my daughter has a fake succulent “collection” and they don’t seem to care. I have plants up in a row of high windows in our school room. One cat was obsessed with getting up there and kept knocking over plants. We kept rearranging the plants and items until he couldn’t get in the first window. I found taller, large items he could see from the desk below deterred him the best. Once he saw he couldn’t get up there, he quit. I also moved the smallest plants to the furthest window so he wouldn’t knock them over if he tried. The other cats never cared. I also have some on a window sill in the kitchen that is mostly blocked by a curtain, trashcan, movable island, and a bookshelf type thing with open shelves. I have items set up in a way that keep them from getting to these. I have mostly succulent and pinguicula cuttings on this sill so it’s easy to pull back the curtain to mist them. I originally had pots on there, but it’s a pain to pull them out and water them regularly. I also have some on the open bookshelf, with a grow light. But it’s high enough up, they can’t get to it. I have removed or blocked with objects the surfaces closest to it so they can’t jump up there. I only placed plants on furniture I have had for a while so I knew my cats were not interested in getting up there. I also mist them with water if they try to get somewhere I don’t want them to be to discourage it. I also have some on a bathroom window sill and hanging above. These are toxic to cats but they rarely enter that room, and never go to that part of my bathroom. I would suggest window sills that are blocked off, high shelves with grow lights, or hanging planters in front of windows. Sometimes sitting in the floor with the cats and the new plant to let them be curious helps. It allows you to set boundaries also and nudge them back if they try to chew on it. Sometimes that makes them want to play with it more later. It’s hard to say, just depends on the cat. For most things, my cats want to get up close and personal with the new thing for a little bit. Then they are over it.😄 Of course they still have LOTS of window sills and higher surfaces they are allowed on. Try putting plants in places they are already over.😄 I’ll try to add some pictures to help this make more sense.
