I’m thinking about adding plants to my leaped geckos enclosure, but I’m not sure what species of plants are safe for them and belong in their natural habitat (aired and dry desert). If anyone has done a natural enclosure with leopard geckos and put plants in it what did you place in it?
Looking on Inaturalist, wild gecko photos typically show desert with rocks and hard sandy ground. Occasionally there will be a dry and likely dead shrub or grass, but it's almost no plants. Leopard geckos' native range is mostly around pakistan, also including the southern tip of afghanistan and the western part of india. I looked at plants from there, but the ones I looked at (small, seen in photos of other lizards, looked good for dry and rocky areas) were all either covered in thorns or sharp twigs, or likely toxic to geckos. If you're okay with non-native plants, desert grasses, portulacaria afra, and non-cactus succulents (like echevarias) are safe and not too bad a match for looks. If you'd like to try mosses, steppe screw moss is known to thrive in deserts, but not as available for sale. Silvery bryum (scientific name: bryum argenteum) is much more commonly available and also a good option. (While silvery bryum is drought tolerant, it looks its best with misting every 1-3 days). Most of the leopard gecko plant safety guides only talk about tropical plants, since they're the most commonly available. Those are great for adding color, but won't look much like the native habitat
