Meet Sir Percival Thistlewhisk III, Keeper of the Porch Ferns, Steward of the Terracotta Realms, and Honorary Consul to the League of Garden Amphibians. He told me you can just call him Percy though. This lil fella turned up in my Thai Con about a month ago. Which is wild, since it lives on the second story screened in balcony. So I named him and told him he could stay but he would have to earn his keep. He eats all the buggies off of my Alocasias. Anyways- he sleeps in Polly during the day and hunts at night. He also appreciates the lil fountain I thrifted for him. If anyone has any tips for frog care lmk.

    A fair amount of frogs like earthworms. He looks fairly small so crickets might be too big for him, but crickets and mealworms are popular food for treefrogs that are kept as pets. Shallow dishes of filtered water should work well for Percy, and the fountain sounds like a fun item for him 😊 I guess the biggest thing would be to quarantine any plants that you have to treat with anything toxic to animals, like insecticidal soaps or treatments for fungus gnats or copper fungicide and such, to keep Percy from coming in contact with anything toxic to him. If you want a little project and half colder months in the autumn and fall, you could maybe try setting an indoor terrarium up for him if you want him to stick around come next year. I’d ask for advice from a pet store for that, though 😂 Percy is adorable. I’d love to have a little protector of my garden. I’ve got a ceramic toad from my Great-Aunt named Henry. Not sure if he wards much off, but I like that he looks a little grumpy and menacing.

      You are such a wealth of knowledge!!! Thank you so much. Some of that I didn’t even think of. We are in Orlando so even in winter it’s warm/hot. I am thrifting a small terrarium for hurricanes. I am in love with your toad!!

      No problem 😊 and I’m a fan of Sir Henry the toad as well. He’s a fun family heirloom of sorts now. Currently guarding my raised bed of lilies. I wish he could scare some ants off for me, though 😂 Good luck with Percy

    Absolutely no soaps. If you intend to hold him, no lotions or moisturizers either. He looks to be in the treefrog family, but isn't a species in my area. If you filter by amphibian and location on Inaturalist you should be able to ID species and get more specific care info. For monitoring his health, watch his hip/rib area for weight changes. If he's staying there voluntarily, he probably has food, but feeder crickets from any pet store would work if he needs more. He may try to burrow into the soil to hibernate, so watch for him when you move the plants. From what I've seen, frogs will wake up from hibernation and go back to sleep just fine if there's a random warm day in winter

      I am a fan of Percy from far away- he jumped on me once and we had to have a heart to heart. He’s so tiny I was concerned about what he’s eating- but I am finding frog poop- so what goes in comes out? But yes he may come inside during hurricanes and I was concerned about the food situation. You’re a genius! Thank you for the tips:)
