Volver a The Orchid Oasis

Update post on my Paphiopedilums that were growing roots way too high… | The Orchid Oasis | Comunidad de Planta

Update post on my Paphiopedilums that were growing roots way too high above the medium to survive. Proof that orchids are just crazy plants… I cut the fans and stuck them in sphagnum moss to see if I could get roots to grow and not dry out. 8-10 weeks of keeping them moist, and one is growing roots and thriving. The other hasn’t budged, tiny little nubs of undeveloped roots BUT IT IS STILL ALIVE and… STARTED GROWING A NEW LEAF. What the heck?!? These guys are such survivors… how in the world has #2 managed this with NO roots?!?

How exciting! I am so happy you got the one to root. Weird idea on the other bashful rooter - what about putting an easier propagater, like pothos or syngonium, in the sphagnum with it? My thought is the other plant is producing hormones as it roots and that might induce activity in the dormant nodes of your paph cutting.

Interesting… I hadn’t considered something like that… I’m almost a strictly orchid/succulent grower, but we do have a spider plant that may be a possibility. 🤔🤔🤔 I’ll let you know if it works. Thanks for the idea!
