Has anyone here ever tried to propagate an orchid? Thinking about using them for centerpieces/wedding favors next year, and if I could create my own little babies that would be awesome!

I don’t have any first hand experience so take what I say with a grain of salt. There are a couple of ways to go about it but all take time. With Phals you can apply keiki paste to unspent nodes on inflorescences. Not guaranteed but you might get a baby orchid. Some will keiki freely, like vandas and epidendrums. Fertilizing dendrobium nobiles at precisely the wrong time can result in keikis instead of flowers. You can separate larger specimens of sympodial orchids (dendrobiums, cattleyas, oncidiums, etc) into clusters of no less than three pseudobulbs. However, I think the chances of back bulbs thriving is highly unlikely. Catasetums appear to be an exception to the rule and new plants can be grown from one pseudobulb. You can also grow orchids from seeds like the way Mother Nature does. However, it’s a fairly involved process. The seeds mush be collected in a sterile environment and placed in a nutrient solution in flasks. As the grow, they will have to be thinned and possibly moved into larger flasks. After roughly two years (or maybe three, I’m going from memory here) the seedlings can be planted in pots. It takes another three to five years to get blooms. You can also clone plants but that skews even more into mad scientist territory.

Wow that’s all very good information, thank you so much! I think I have a Phal orchid but I’m not 100% sure. I’m pretty new to orchids! But this is mine

Ding! Ding! Ding! That’s a phalaenopsis. And a lovely one too. You have a great idea. I suggest you research orchid propagation online (to get real information from a better source than my memory). Let us know who what you decide to do!
