Cattleyas have notoriously sensitive roots. Most of the roots on the older growths will just die off after being disturbed in the repotting process. Soaking the media really well before hand can help with not damaging or bruising them, but generally, you’ll get a lot of dead roots no matter what. The best time to repot is when new roots are starting to come out of the newest growth. Every hybrid is a little different about when that occurs; it may be as the newest little pseudobulb is emerging, when it has matured, or as it begins to produce a sheath or buds. If you don’t wait for new roots, there will be nothing to support the plant when the old ones are dying off, and you risk the orchid getting really dehydrated, set back, or dying before it can produce new roots to sustain it.

I bought 3 new cattleyas a couple weeks ago as well. This one has been repotted, as the roots were starting to show.

This one just has a new pseudobulb starting, with lots of old roots throughout the media. So I’m going to wait on repotting this one.
