Hi! I am new to this group and to orchids. My grandmother gave me an orchid and its leaves are falling off and has never had stems. I’m not sure what she needs but she gets plenty of light and water.

What type of water do you use? Rainwater or distilled is best for plants as tap has too many minerals for most plants.

It just depends on where you live and the salt/mineral content of your water. Most people grow their orchid just fine with tap water- if you have very hard water, it would just benefit them if you soaked and then ran water through the pots to flush away the salt once a month or so I would guess these guys have never been repotted and it’s long over due. If the old media is broken down and old it may be acidic and harmful to the roots. If you have a lot of root loss, the leaves may be dropping and getting leathery and wrinkled from lack of hydration.

Orchids don’t like that much water. I was dubious when Planta was telling me how often to water, my orchid, but as soon as I started following the program, it bloomed. There are some sources that they only half a cup a week, but I’ve only been watering mine every two weeks. Also, repotting probably helps in a special orchid bark.
