    Vandas are epiphytes, so in the wild they'd be clinging to a tree. When watering, make sure to hit the roots directly and use lukewarm water. Make sure things drain and dry properly after watering to prevent root rot. Avoid getting water in the crevices where the leaves meet. They like lots of light, warmer temperatures (minimum 55°F for the room and no colder than 50°F for watering. Aim for 70°-95°F day temp.) They can be grown in bark or with roots exposed; sphagnum is mostly only used for young sprouts. It should be a reliable bloomer, but if it needs help, try a 10-20° temperature difference from day to night, or try to replicate their natural winter conditions

    How are the roots? If the yellowing of the stems is advancing, you may have had root rot and the infection is moving up the stem.

    I agree with Jen about root rot. In the one image where you pulled away the sphagnum, the roots look a little suspect. Is the stem soft? My experience with Vandas is that water should be plentiful but the roots need to dry out quickly between waterings. That will be difficult to manage with sphagnum in an indoor growing space. Given your growing space, I would grow them bare root. I have mine in similar baskets but with lava rock. I keep them outside in the summer and it gets to 100-110 in my area during the hottest days. As Waspinator pointed out, that’s a little too warm. Unfortunately I only have time to water once a day so my hope is the lava holds on to a tiny amount of water and help makeup for my busy schedule. It works okay but half are a little wrinkled in places (dehydration). Things are easier now that the temps have drop into the 90s. The wrinkling is slowly improving. During the winter when they are inside, they don’t get as much light and aren’t actively growing so watering is less frequent, roughly every 2 to 4 days. If your roots are good, then loss of leaves in a good indicator of too little light.

    I believe I should not have used the moss. I couldn’t completely see the roots and only watered them every 3-5 days. They were in my bathroom with a sun grow light hanging from a shower rod my husband installed in the middle of the tub for me. I think I will try again next spring and grow outside. These are rotting and I haven’t been able to save orchids with root rot yet. Thank you for your advice. Over the winter I will study more about the Vanda orchids.
