If you’re determined to grow them in water, I think there’s people in this group who have had success with it. I will just give you this warning… most orchids are epiphytic. In nature, they grow on trees. They need air around their roots as much as they need water. They are not like water lilies, or other aquatic plants. The majority of people who lose their orchids, lose them to root rot. You cannot keep these roots wet all the time without them turning to mush. I think people who have success with this type of growth are very good about dumping the water and letting the roots completely dry between waterings. For me, the risks of losing the plant outweigh any aesthetic benefits to a water set up.

i’m trying to grow one now but it’s not doing as well as i had hoped. i feel like it was much healthier in its pot. i might just have to repot her 😭

How are the roots?

not as plump as they were before! on tiktok they said to put a little water at the bottom and that the water would evaporate to water them. but bonnie(my orchid) leaves aren’t as firm as they were before i put her like that. i give her food twice a month and check on her roots once a day

I cover my roots 3/4 of the way with water, I’ve not found adding a small amount at the bottom to work for me

I have mines sitting in water for 4-5 days and then I let it dry out for around three days :)

DoryAll of mine are in water culture currently and loving it! Sunday is their dry out day… they get their roots scrubbed with a soft toothbrush. If flowering they get a sprinkle of cinnamon powder once dry (natural antifungal) and if dormant I will add orchid food every other water change. Monday they go back into their cleaned and sanitized glass pots. Our window gets afternoon evening light that’s not super bright so I have a grow light set up with a few small humidifiers.
