According to the Planta plan I am supposed to be fertilizing my moth orchid tomorrow. I am not used to this type of orchid pot. It’s all plastic with no side slots to allow drainage, just a hole center bottom. It’s still quite wet from the last watering. My first thought is to skip the feeding, as I don’t want to drown the poor thing. It’s still in full bloom so I don’t want to repot. Any advice would be much appreciated!

I would suggest to wait on watering it and possibly add more holes to the sides or bottom of the container when it’s done blooming, as orchids love good drainage :)

Good thing about these pots is it is very easy to cut your own slits in the side. I usually bend right where the raised part is and snip along that line

I’ll try this. A little worried about slicing the root…

Most of the time you can get it free enough from the side that you won't hurt the plant. I would personally wait for the bloom to fall first

I would also suggest you water as needed- NOT according to planta’s schedule. They mean well, but their recommendations don’t take into account your pot, your media, your climate, your environment, or any of the many other things that will affect how often you water. Definitely add ventilation, or repot into a different pot if this is a new orchid. Those roots are green and plump. They need to dry completely before you water again. Dry roots are slightly silvery in color.

I bought a new orchid media called “Black Gold”. Says it’s a mixture of fit bark, cinders, perlite & wetting agent. I need to repot my other orchids soon.

My MO is I fertilize when there is active growth (root, leaf, bud development)

I’ve been using a spray fertiliser once a week for my orchids and it’s been working out really well! I don’t have to worry about the plant not taking in the nutrients, I just spray it directly onto the bark

I’ll watch for that. Currently using Espoma orchid bloom booster, 1-3-1
