Hi all. I’m very new to plant parenting. My mini isn’t doing so well. I repotted her 2 weeks ago but her leaves are looking a bit leathery. I was excited that she seems to have a new spike, but not sure. Any suggestions welcome.

It looks like your orchid is putting on a new spike to me. Yay! It looks dehydrated. The wrinkles are the biggest indicator. Flowering can be a very draining process. I have an oncidium that wrinkles noticeably when in bloom (it puts out in a big show), but it smooths out when watered. Phalanopsis don’t typically do this, at least in my experience. A couple of questions: - Did it look this way before you repotted? How about when you got it? - What did the roots look like when you repotted? (Healthy = green, yellow or silver, firm and smooth. Dead or dying = black or brown, papery or mushy.) - What kind of media was it in originally? - How often do you water? - Do you soak the pot or top water?

I totally agree with dehydration. The original media was spongy moss and my fear was that it was too compact which was my rationale for changing (and curiosity about how the roots looked, lol). The roots were in pretty good condition I would say; there were a couple that were bad and I snipped. I do combo watering- soak and pour over, and frequency was per this app suggestion. As I read your questions and am typing answers (and the fact she fell yesterday while window was being closed 😩)….should I add something to the media to hold in more water? Thank you SO much for your help. Edited to add: pic of her while soaking before replacing/adding media (since her fall last night 🥺).

You might consider topdressing with 1/4” to 1/2” sphagnum to help increase moisture. When repotting from straight sphagnum, I find it helpful to use a sphagnum bark mix to minimize any shock. I wouldn’t repot again though. Be careful about strictly following the app’s watering schedule. I find it’s a useful tool to help organize tasks but doesn’t replace observation and intuition. Orchid mixes vary wildly in moisture retention, with new bark being on the low end. I would up the frequency a little and see how your plant responds. Best indicator is for the roots in the pot to silver.
