My orchid babies, all of these came to me in dire condition, some I’ve been growing for years. Others are new this season. I cleaned them all up and decided to make an orchid log to mimic their natural growing conditions/environment with moss and a piece of driftwood. It’s going great, and they’re happy as ever!

Yes I do know plants very well, I have worked at multiple nurseries, greenhouses, and a conservatory, and I’m only 20 lol. It’s truly my calling, they just come to me and I am just compelled to care for them all.

Anyone can be that close to plants you just have to seek out the opportunities and spend as much time around them as possible. It just takes time to build a strong and durable relationship and understanding of them. I have been growing my own house plants for about 4 years, and I just started working more outside last summer

Can I grow my orchid in just sphagnum moss?

Yes totally, as you can see they love it in moss. However if you’re going to do so they need a lot of good and consistent airflow for the roots to breathe. Moss can retain a lot of water and take forever to dry out if it is densely packed and trapped in a pot or container without easy access to air. So I wouldn’t use just moss if you’re putting them into a pot, maybe a terracotta pot could work with moss if it’s not densely packed and there are lots of roots. i think the best way is to mimic nature, and mount moss on wood like I did, and the orchid, and cover all your orchids roots with moss and it will thrive in that environment. But you will have to water it much more frequently as more airflow= quicker drying time.
