I’m trying to find recommendations for potting mix and fertilizer. Do you have any you swear by? Any input is welcome, I’d especially love to know your reasoning! Thanks very much!

Ooooo, I hope others will respond to your post. I am really curious to see what’s working for them. For me, the media depends on what type of orchid I’m dealing with. For phals I’ll use orchid bark from a box store. I do not like the orchid bag mixes that contains peat. For others, I have been using Repotme mixes for a couple of years with reasonable success. You want to size the bark according to root thickness. The bigger the root, the bigger the bark. I primarily use either Espoma or Repotme MSU fertilizers. The Repotme seems to give more blooms (I am probably imagining that) but it can be little hard to get ahold of. Espoma is usually sold at nurseries and box stores (so pretty easy to get ahold of) but Mr Pi doesn’t like the smell. I’ll use the same fertilizer I use on the rest of the green mob in a pinch. Honestly, I don’t think the type of fertilizer matters unless you are a serious hobbyist who is competing in shows. The important thing is amount. Don’t over do it. You can burn roots quickly. My house is a weekly weakly establishment. I add fertilizer at a quarter strength every week. And once a month I’ll skip the fertilizer and use clear water to flush away accumulated salts. One last thought is to experiment. What works for me may not work for you. And I find it enjoyable to switch things up and see what happens. Sometimes the results are amazing 😁

Wow thank you very much, you get a lot of general advice online, so I like seeing this specific routine, and your thought process behind it!
2개 좋아요I love the repotme mixes as well- they tend to do a really good job of GENERALLY estimating what a specific type of orchid needs, but you’ll definitely want to trust your judgement on your own environment and how often you’re going to want to water. If you like to water frequently, you won’t need a ton of sphagnum moss in the mix, if you live in a very dry environment, you might want more, just so you aren’t drying out way too quickly and having to water every couple of days. As far as fertilizer, I use a time release granule that I add when repotting and then replenish every 6 months to a year depending on the type of orchid. I know myself, and I don’t always have time to add fertilizer to my watering regime, and all my orchids are on different schedules, so I’d lose track of who needs fertilizer when. It’s really about what works for YOU.
3개 좋아요I like the Repotme potting mixes and the Repotme MSU fertilizers as well and like the results. Still fairly new to Orchids. I have also been watching “Miss Orchid Girl” on YouTube. She has tons of videos and they are easy to understand and follow.
