I’ve managed to successfully get seed pods on this beautiful pink orchid. Has anyone had any luck in getting the seeds to root by just scattering them in the pots of your already established orchids? No, propagating orchids by seed is a really complicated process. It includes laboratory conditions and requires a completely sterile environment.

Always baffled that plants can grow without any human interventions outdoors, but once people get involved it’s sterile laboratory conditions 😆🤣
좋아요 1개Happy to explain it further… the seeds need sterile conditions because they are so tiny that they don’t have a food reserve to grow on. They depend on a symbiotic relationship with fungi in nature. In a home environment they wouldn’t necessarily get that. Also, the nutrient-rich medium they require attracts UNFAVORABLE bacteria and fungi, so you’d have the keep those away, with the sterile conditions I mentioned above. The screen shot is from the American Orchid Society. But there are plenty of more in-depth articles you can read. But in general, this is why they are pretty rare in nature.
See that was my thought too! They grow on their own in nature but with people it’s complicated

What pollinated your orchid? Was it outside?
