I had to perform a little surgery on this moth orchid about a week ago and she was doing okay. Her roots were extremely damaged and I ended up cutting a few off and just chopped the flower stem down, then repotted her into a bigger pot with proper orchid mix. I took her down from my shelf just now and noticed this leaf, there also seems to be a tiny fly hanging around her (gnat?) This is my first time properly caring for plants and I would love any insight! Thank you so much :)

    I would set up a bug catcher around her…. I would also invest in a neem oil and some insecticidal soap. Combine both together in a spray bottle with some water and spray her to get rid of any fungus, bacteria, and/or bugs.

      Agreed, it looks a little low. You don’t want water collecting in the leaf joints. That can lead to rot, which will kill the plant. Did you get an orchid mix with peat in it? That could be contributing to the fungus gnat issue. I personally don’t like the mixes with peat because I feel like they stay too wet and don’t let the roots dry out. And fungus gnats are typically indicative of media staying too wet for too long.

    When you repotted into this bark mix, had it come from its original tightly packed sphagnum mix? 2 things- that is a drastic change for an orchid, and the plant could drop one of the oldest lower leaves as it adjusts. It’s not unusual. If possible, I would recommend potting into a clear plastic very ventilated orchid pot that you can then put in any decorative pot you like. It makes it easier to see the roots and determine when they have completely dried (and turned slightly silvery.) The slits or holes in the orchid specific pots allows for really good drainage and allows air to reach the roots, which is essential for epiphytic orchids. The fact that you are experiencing some fungus gnats, and based on the color of your bark and the terracotta it’s potted in, all add up into making me believe you may have an excessive moisture issue that could lead to root rot. 😬
