I’m thinking about getting a lighting jewel orchid. Can y’all tell me how to water it and any tips and tricks y’all have learned?

Sorry, I killed mine within 24 hours of getting it 🫠 You don’t want my help lol

Yeh haha notice I’m not trying to stop you from getting it. My biggest pet peeve is someone telling others not to buy plants because of their experiences. There’s lots of people with happy Jewel orchids. I’m that rare person that thinks Calatheas are easy, to each their own. Best of luck! They’re gorgeous
1 mi piaceI have two orchids I completely forgot about for a week they are phals and are very hearty. Try a moth orchid!

Ooh I’ve been wanting one too! I have a common jewel orchid that is not loving life right now though 😬 But! I’m pretty sure my mistake was treating it the same as an epiphytic orchid. From what I understand now, they’re terrestrial orchids and don’t like moisture retaining mediums. But mine hasn’t bounced back yet, so maybe don’t take my word for it 😅 I recommend doing some reading on the best growing medium for them. Or maybe someone who actually has a healthy one will chime in lol. Good luck! Post pictures when you get it ☺️

Oh also I have read DO NOT use keiki/orchid paste on jewel orchids. It’s a plant growth hormone, but it’s specifically made for epiphytic orchids. Apparently it makes jewel orchids tank because they react self-destructively to the hormones.

0 Mi piaceI don’t have a lot of experience with jewel orchids, but Paphiopedilums are terrestrial orchids, and they DO like more moisture retention in their medium. It’s my understanding that jewel orchids prefer an even finer potting mix than paphs.

I have just dipped my toes into the jewels but this is what I’ve experienced so far. 1. Make your introduction easier - start with a Ludisia discolor. It doesn’t need the higher humidity levels that others need. 2. Don’t treat them like a typical orchid. They want to stay consistently moist, not wet. If leaves start to turn red, most likely the media is too dry. 3. You can get specialty media mixes if you want to be an overachiever. But a lot of people online repot success using an aroid mix (1/3 potting soil, 1/3 orchid bark, 1/3 perlite). 4. Mine are okay about Phalanopsis light levels. Miss Orchis Girl and Here… But Not have some good information on YouTube. Good luck!
