I think I’m getting my first flower spike! This new growth seems rather “edged” and not like a cone so I’m crossing all my fingers. (And if it is I have NO IDEA how I did that… need to figure it out so I can do it to my other orchid too!)

If you don’t see a spike on your neighboring phal in the next couple of weeks, you may have to try the temp drop that some hybrids absolutely need in order to induce a flower spike. It’s not necessarily the care or conditions- some just have the genetics of parents who need that cue.
1 mi piace Ohhh ok thanks! The spike-less one is my older one and only has had 2 blooms in the several years I’ve had it (not always been a knowledgeable plant mum) so she might need some coaxing. How long would you wait to see if she gets a spike? 2-3weeks?

1 mi piaceIt’s not going to hurt her to just go ahead with the nightly cool-down for a couple weeks. Put her in an unheated area, garage, etc (or just near a cracked open window) every night for a couple of weeks. As long as the temps in your area aren’t going below 59 F, that might give your phals the little push they need.
1 mi piace Would it being next to/close to an AC vent be ok? Nightly temps are dipping to 14°C (57°F) around these parts.
0 Mi piaceI don’t know. I have always heard to keep orchids away from air conditioners and heating sources. I’d just crack a window a bit and put the plant near it- you’re just lowering the temp in the room a few degrees, not trying to get it to outside temps.
