I just got a Tolumnia Orchid Hybrid on clearance for $20 it was originally marked for $40 I heard that their flowers are beautiful! I put them into water and am hoping for the best!

    Get it out of water! Most orchids are epiphytes (plants that cling to trees in the wild), so their roots need to dry out between waterings. Tolumnias prefer even more air/faster drying than most (but do want water frequently.) If you want to do water culture with orchids, keep them suspended over a pool with their roots not touching it (to maintain high humidity), and let the roots soak in water for 5-20 minutes about once a week. Otherwise just plant it in orchid bark. You can add some sphagnum if you need extra moisture retention, but most epiphytes prefer an airy mix

      I currently don’t have any orchid substrate. Do you have any suggestions on what I should do?

      I’d like to add my 2 cents just as a different perspective from where I am as a desert dweller, I water mine once a week and soak for 1 hour. To recommend a brand to answer your question, I use and LOVE Sol Soils orchid blend. I use that with a tiny bit of added sphagnum since my home humidity is terrible being in a desert environment. Also to play off the previous comment, if you’re not familiar with epiphytes I strongly encourage you to do to some self research for education. Knowing the differences in terrestrial and epiphytic plants will help you make better care decisions in the future for longer lasting, healthier, and prettier plants

      Orchid mix is not hard to get or expensive—wherever you bought the plant almost certainly has it. And there are a lot of variations, but the important thing is, you can’t plant it in water or in the same soil you’d plant a violet or a pothos in. Those will suffocate it. It needs something really chunky that allows for there to be a lot of air down there among the roots. There are a lot of different kinds of orchid mixes but I wouldn’t get into it. As long as it’s designed for orchids and you don’t overwater, you won’t kill it!
