Hi guys, I’m new to orchids (although I watched like 5 hours of orchid videos last week trying to save my mom’s big one) and I just brought home this baby one on Friday (about 4 days ago). I waited a couple days for her to get used to her new spot and then watered because her roots were all silver/dry. Now, just 2 days after watering, I see these shriveled and wrinkly silver roots up top. Not sure what to do since it looks like the rest of her roots are still green and moist (although a couple look bad). I want to repot her into bark and maybe sphagnum moss, but I wanted to wait until her blooms have dropped. What do y’all think? Should I mist the top roots, or would that be bad and potentially cause rot?

    I've started misting mine everyday with distilled water and they seem to love it. I'm bad about keeping up a regular water schedule with them so misting has helped. Good luck!

    It’s ok to lose a couple of your aerial roots- you have a ton in the pot that will sustain your orchid when you’re ready to repot. You sound like you have a good grasp on watering, letting the roots dry before you water again. You can mist- but don’t have to. Just try to avoid leaving water on the leaves- especially in the crown and leaf joints.

    Next time you water, soak the roots in lukewarm water for 5-10 minutes and let it drain well before putting it back in the decorative pot. She looks really rootbound (not terrible, they like it some) so when she stops flowering, it might be worth repotting in a slightly larger pot. You can find clear plastic orchid pots with holes for lots of airflow, so I recommend those, or you can poke holes yourself. She looks beautiful!!

      Also, I’ve had the best luck with just orchid bark. I live in Florida so I like that the bark will dry out fully so I don’t overwater. It looks like your decorative pot is ceramic/terracotta: this will hold on to a little bit of excess moisture so keep that in mind with your watering. You can probably delay it a couple of days if needed. If you don’t already, get a high quality liquid fertilizer to add to the water once a month. I got one from Amazon labeled “Professional Orchid Fertilizer” for about $15 and my orchids are doing so well.
