Soo I repotted my orchid in February. It’s been a while and it hasn’t fully recovered because the ends of its roots seem blackened and shriveled. People on Planta assured me this is fine and after accidentally waiting too long to water it which lead to its leaves wrinkling, I watered it. The roots became green but didn’t really plump up but the leaves condition did improve. I watered it yesterday and it’s the same deal. The roots don’t seem to be taking in any water because like an hour later they’re completely silver and still shriveled (not just on the ends) but my orchid isn’t dead…so is this ok? And I was thinking since I have fungus gnats on my orchid I wanted to bottom water but there aren’t enough roots for me to do that. Could I literally just soak the roots in water for a few seconds instead of watering the soil?

Once the roots wrinkle, they don’t change. It looks to me that the growing tips have died which just means that root will not get any longer. Not to worry. This will not affect their ability to take up water. And roots can branch and the plant will send out more roots from the stem so you don’t need to worry about root development stalling. It’s a good sign that the leaves are smoother. And I wouldn’t worry about the roots on top drying out quickly. It’s wild you have fungus gnats though. Watch that you are not watering too often. When I water my orchids, I soak the pot for 10 - 15 minutes. It seems to allow the plants to take up the water they need and then start the process of drying out. Wait to water my phals until the media is almost dry. What are the white marks at the crown?

You mean on the base of the leaves? I believe those are just due to trauma
