Got my first Cattleya. I tried looking it up on the Internet, but kept getting mixed answers. Do they like bare root or do they like bark? I understand bare root is more work, but I’d rather do more work to keep my orchid at its happiest.

Mine are all in a mix of sphagnum moss and bark. My biggest tip on these are that the roots are ridiiiiiiiiiiculously sensitive. So I tend to pot in a size up from what I might use when repotting a phal paph or oncidium, so that these roots have plenty of time to grow in one place without repotting too frequently. Even being extra gentle, the roots tend to just die off if scratched, bruised, or too roughly handled. If you choose to go with just bark, I’d use a mix that has smaller pieces, not super chunky. When repotting, it just makes for a gentler experience in the roots. They will grow along the larger surface area of the bigger bark pieces and just be impossible to remove old media without damage. When you do repoT, timing is everything. WAIT FOR THE NEWEST PSEUDOBULB TO BEGIN TO GROW ITS NEW ROOTS. This way, even if you mangle the old ones, and they all die off in the pot within the month- you’ll have the new roots from the new growth coming in to sustain the orchid.

Michelle’s HobbyI also have one of these. Mine is called Why NotRed. It’s probably time to repot mine too but I’m scared because of roots damage. Here is a picture of mine. Any suggestions from all would help! Thanks. She came with heat pack burn so cinnamon is on the leaf.
