Firm roots are good, the fact they are green means they are/have been getting light to photosynthesis. These roots are healthy & if they aren’t a silver covering (which is completely fine) it’s because they are getting water

The shriveled and dry air roots may just need more humidity than your environment provides. But in the second photo, the discoloration is actually lower on the roots, closer to the media. This makes me think that old media, which can break down and get almost acidic, is a contributing factor. If both plants are still in their original media and in those low ventilation flimsy plastic inserts, repotting would be my first step. You could then asses the rest of the roots and trim away anything dead. If you go that route, let us know- this group can guide you through solid recommendations for repotting.
