OH. NOOOOO I have been babying my wee moth orchid for months, it seems. She lost her lower leaves, and essentially no roots left when examined. She was left with one wee little green tip ' a root trying to grow and she had 2 tiny leaves that popped up. So, I removed all the dead stuff leaving her with this stump/stalk and her wee root. Planta helped me with instruction... She was in a cloche that the underside was misted daily & a grow light. I've been babying her and - sigh, over cared. Looking at her today- found the wee root was to moist & sloughed off. I gave her stalk a water bath to clean her and she is as you see. I changed out her cactus/succulent tiny chips & will put her back in the cloché under the growlight. Now - my hard question. What to fo next? Do I organize a funeral? I need your truthful help

    Try putting her in a little cup of water under indirect light that’s how I got the roots back on my dying orchid.. then u can transition it back to orchid bark once it has established roots

      I do have that little cup of water, but, just keep her in it 24hrs/day? Maybe i could try my bathroom window for her - n9 grow light?

      Yes keep it in there 24/7 the bathroom window is perfect because they love humidity!! You kinda have to forget about it for a bit and let it do its thing

      It took my orchid a couple months to start growing roots and stems again so you just have to be patient and just change the water every week

    do not keep an orchid with root rot in water 24/7. you are asking for stem and crown rot. HOVER the stem over the water, and keep in that humidity dome. "burp" it or open it at least once a day for five ish minutes. it may take months for you to see roots, but if it's not dying it's doing something !

    Keep it in high air humidity (like 80-100%) with good air flow (so the crown stays dry). Its leaves are in decent condition, so it should recover. Its leaves are dark, so give it more light than it's currently getting (ideal color is a bright apple-green. The leaves turn yellow or sun-stress to purple if it's getting too much light. A slight flush of purple at the leaf edges is okay.) If they fully dry out, you can pull off the old leaf stems on the bottom (see picture. Pull them out and down, trim off if needed) to make it easier on new roots growing in. Once it has roots, water those once a week. Get water directly on them (since the plant will be dehydrated, you can do 20 minute soak sessions to help it get a good, long drink.) Avoid getting water where all the leaves meet, and dry that area if you splash it. Make sure the water drains fully after watering. Use room-temperature water. The current leaves are likely to dehydrate as it recovers. Watch the youngest (top) leaves to monitor health. Keeping the plant stable can also help new root development; don't let it get bumped or shaken. When you pot it, use chunky orchid bark, add a little sphagnum moss near but not touching the roots, and stake it (or tie it down using the pot's drainage holes and the space between the oldest leaves) for stability.

      I want to thank everyone for their responses! If you finger type like i do, it could be annoying with the mistypes. I have decided to use my little cup with criss-cross scotch on top to helo it stay stable over but nit touching warer. It will remain in the cloche that will have the underside misted a few times during the day, it it needs it. Also will be using the growlight. Turning it around here & there. I take the cloche off for a bit daily. I still have a question, tho. Does she need a soak daily or everywhere dsy now, when she has no roots? .

      For now, no soaking. There's no point in doing that until it has some root to work with. Also I wouldn't do daily soaking; once every 3-5 days is enough. The way you set it up is great; that'll keep humidity high without rotting it.

    To give tender new roots the best and easiest chance of emerging, on an already VERY STRESSED and dehydrated orchid like this, I would remove the tough old leaf remains from the base. (See photo)
