Hi everyone! I’m new to orchids and I need help!!! My gma gave me this coconut orchid and I’m desperate to save it!! My gma had her sitting in a jar of water for a while before she gave it to me. Ngl it looked pretty bad in the water. She’s now repotted. In chunky orchid soil mix with orchid moss but idk what to do with her. 2 yellow leaves fell this morning and I noticed that brown thing. ( this is my favorite kind of orchid from the best gma I could ask for and I reallllly want this plant to live. Any tips would be so welcome and appreciated!!) (side note has anyone else ever smelled the flowers of the coconut orchid? Is that not one of the most beautiful smells you’ve ever smelt? ❤️)

    Yes! I love the scent of this orchid. I assume there was a lot of rot from sitting in water. When you repotted did you cut away the rotten roots? Does this pot have good drainage and lots of holes (even on the sides) for good airflow? You want a good cycle of wetting the media and letting some air get to the roots. It’s very dehydrated so I know you will want to over water- but don’t. In time, if it’s not too far gone, it should put out new roots. The only thing you can do is wait and hope for the best.

      I left all her roots intact! I’ll get her out the pot and cut it all back. I was just reading that the roots should be green or silver.. mine are all brown. I’ll trim and re pot! The pot has no extra side holes but I’ll make some. Thank you for the info!!!

      Green or silver usually refer to phalaenopsis orchids. Go by feeling not color for this orchid. If they are mushy, they have to go. If they are firm, they can still help the plant until it grows new roots.

      Lord, I wish I read that before I cut them all off😭 they were pretty mushy for the most part.

      Bummer! I would expect they were pretty much gone after sitting in water though- so you probably didn’t lose too many good roots. Wishing you so much luck. Keep us posted and let us know how it’s going.
