Does anyone know what this leaf-like growth is on my orchid’s newest spike? I’ve looked some stuff up, but nothing seems to match this. Please let me know if you have an idea. 😊

    I think it might be the beginnings of a keiki!

      That would be great! It also makes sense based on its condition, coming from a clearance shelf, headed towards death, because I’ve heard keikis can form when an orchid is trying to survive.

    I believe you have a terminal inflorescence, basically when the plant sends out a flower spike from the frowning point of the crown. Unfortunately this eliminates the plant’s ability to produce more leaves making it essentially a terminal condition.

      Yikes. While I was really hoping for a keiki, this makes so much more sense based on the plants newest leaf development. I guess my only hope now is to hope for a keiki to grow along the current flower spike, something apparently more possible in this scenario.

      Very possible to get a spike keiki after flowers bloom, but there’s also a possibility of getting a basel keiki at some point. So even if your flower spike eventually dries off, don’t lose hope. Your orchid won’t just die on you- it’s lower leaves my yellow and drop over time, but that could take years. So I’d keep caring for it, and hope the plant’s instinct for survival kicks in. đŸ€žđŸŒ
