First repot. I know it’s not recommended to repot with a flower spike as that can interrupt bloom cycle but this one was growing by the time the first blooms from the store died and it was getting really root bound. I’d rather lose one flower spike than it get more root bound that it was. I also found a sponge (death plug) in the center which I would rather know about than not and chose to remove. The only orchid media I could find is a little denser than what it was in but the new pot also has more drainage so I am hoping that it balances out. Either way the next few weeks will be watching to see how it adjusts.

I saw a video a year or so ago saying they do it because the sponge material is easier to start seeds especially in large quantities for big box stores. It also holds on to more water which is great for starting a plant but not so great long term for a plant that prefers drying out completely between waterings.

ahh! thank you! i forgot to take a pic to create a post. so helpful. i wasn’t sure if me cutting it out was going to cause harm to my orchid. but the leaves are okay. some media is dry but i won’t bother it until spring.
