Hi all. I’ve noticed some very tiny black dots that form a mottled pattern on the pseudobulbs of my oncostele wildcat “yellow king.” There’s also wrinkling. I’m not sure if this is new but does anyone have any insight? TIA!

Any wrinkling of psuedobulbs is generally caused by dehydration. Up the frequency of watering a bit and see if that helps. When new leaves form on dehydrated oncidium types, they will have a pleated accordion-like shape to them that will never smooth out- so catching dehydration now would be a good thing. As far as the dots… dark spots on leaves and pseudobulbs usually make me lean toward a fungal infection, but because this is a Wildcat type, which can be sort of ‘spotted’ there are some hybrids that in high light conditions reflect that trait and look ‘freckled.’ Is this a newer orchid for you, or have you changed its location or light? The location of the spots are also a clue to that- fungal spots GENERALLY come up from the roots/media on pseudobulbs, these seem to be heavier on the top, where light would hit harder. These are just clues- not definitive, so keep an eye on it. Avoid misting, as it can only cause more problems if this is fungal or bacterial. The spots don’t seem like indentations or moist, and they are very regular, not like lesions. But if you notice that the pseudobulbs start to lose firmness, get mushy or soft at all, then you definitely have a problem and would have to act fast.

I know this is a leaf and not a pseudobulb, but it’s the only example that I have. On one of my maintenance lists today is to get rid of this infection on a cattleya leaf. It’s hard to see from the picture, but the black spots are slightly indented, eating into the healthy flesh of the plant. They also tend to cause discoloration, moving up or down the structure- like the yellowing here. The spots are irregular in shape and size.
