I just got this little guy from a plant expo this afternoon and wanted to make sure I potted her right! Also do you think she would do better in my greenhouse/ what kind of lighting would be best?

Ive only had one other orchid but I love my other one and if this one goes well I’ll definitely be adding more to my collection

I don’t have a ton of experience with bulbophyliums, but with any orchids whether they have a pseudobulb, fan, or canes, you don’t want to bury them too deeply in the potting medium. The increased moisture can cause rot. This is SUCH a little guy, with no back up bulbs for resources, I would just be extra cautious with that.

Should I repot him a little higher up? I wasn’t sure how much to cover so I only covered the very bottom part to hold her in place? I definitely want her to do well but I am aware with her being so small she might not make it

Also what kind of sun do you think he will need, google is never very helpful so I have it currently in pretty low light in my greenhouse to keep the humidity up. This is peak sun with the window nearby so it shouldn’t get any brighter in here

I would gently lift it out a bit, yes. How are the roots? Are there enough to eventually take hold, they just aren’t stabilizing it yet? Because in that case, you can use a little stake to support it. I just use little bamboo skewers

I’ll make sure to lift him up, the roots were long, they a little more than doubled the length of the plant but they were very skinny and didn’t look like normal orchid roots (plump and greenish) as they were more brown. I also don’t have any skewers right now so do you think a toothpick or something similar would be okay until I can get some since he’s so small? sorry for all my questions I just want to make sure I’m doing right by it!

No problem at all- happy to help when I can, and yes, anything that will temporarily support the little guy should be fine. As far as light, maybe someone with more experience with this type of orchid would be a more reliable resource- but I believe they are similar in light needs to your standard phalaenopsis- so bright indirect sun. Nothing so bright that it will burn the leaves, but not shade.

I have a little experience with a bulbo, and some with tiny orchids. Yours comes mainly from the evergreen forests of vietnam. It likes a lot of light, but doesn't like that to be direct light. For temperature, average indoor temps should be fine (it likes about 64-68°F at night, and 71-77°F during daytime.) Like most orchids, these are vulnerable to root rot, so stick to bark for substrate. It gets pretty even watering throughout the year, with slight reduction in winter if it slows down growth. Never let it dry all the way out for more than a day; bulbos tend to like staying moist. Orchids like a balanced npk mix for fertilizer, always diluted (this one, being especially tiny, gets 1/6th of the dose listed on the packaging.) In my experience, bulbos aren't too picky about getting thier pseudobulbs wet, as long as it dries off after. If you choose to mount it, use sphagnum to help maintain moisture, but don't pack it too tight. Mounted ones like higher air humidity. Also just fair warning, this species is listed as fragrant, and bulbos tend to smell like carrion to attract flies; the scent usually doesn't travel much, but sniffing it is not recommended

Thank you for the advice! I don’t think I’m going to mount him, and if I do it won’t be until much later so hopefully I’m safe from that for now lol. Does the lighting in the picture look good for him or should I be giving more/less

I should clarify, I commented a picture of it in my greenhouse, that’s the light it would be getting
