Hello! I rescued this orchid from Walmart about 3 years ago, and it hasn’t bloomed in 2 years… I have been desperately trying everything to do this plant some justice, but to no avail. I have all of these dark brown/black roots but they are not squishy, and when I cut one for science, it was still free on the inside. I suspect they are this color because I tried Water Culture, and while it hasn’t killed it, probably has made the poor plant sick. I also have this large growth within the roots that I have not found in any pictures or videos… Just would like some genuine advice about cutting roots, and the best potting situation. Thanks!

Hi! Nice looking plant. I wouldn’t cut any roots. They foundational in your plant’s health. It precious media can inform the new ratio. If you are moving it from water culture, I would use a 50/50 blend of sphagnum and bark. If it’s transitioning from a less water retentive media, then I would use mostly bark with 25% or less sphagnum. Of course adjust accordingly based on your environment and culture. I am heavy handed with the water so I lean toward less retentive media, like all bark. With regard to no blooms, I find it’s typically a question of too little light. Gradually move it to a brighter location. Eat the leaves for burning. If they start to redder, you know that is the max light it can handle without burning. Also, I give mature plants three years to bloom. If they don’t, they are gifted away with the hope that it will respond better to someone else’s care.
