Fertilizer question I’d like to fertilize my orchids but the mixes I look at all have different ratios (30-10-10 or 20-20-15, etc.). I’ve got Phal, Paph, Oncidium orchids and wonder if I need different fertilizer for each one or what’s best?
It’s my understanding that the most balanced fertilizers are best if you can find 10/10/10 etc, that would be ideal. But the most important thing is for them to be orchid specific fertilizers, not just a general house plant fertilizer. Also be sure to read the packaging as dosing instructions can be different between brands. I personally use slow release granules specific to orchids. I have several different types, it has worked well for all of them, (and works well with my sometimes too busy to mix fertilizer into my watering life.)

I like Jen’s post. Solid advice for us hobbyist. If you planning on entering your plants in competitions, you might want to customize your fertilizer by type of orchid, check out AOS. They have culture info for most types. Some growers like use a balanced fertilizer for general feeding and switch to a boom booster while the plant is producing an inflorescence and buds. Most agree to stop fertilizing when the plant is not in active growth. In my house, they all get the same type of fertilizer. What kind of fertilizer mostly depends on what is on hand at the moment. I’ve had reasonably good results with orchid fertilizers in various formulations, but my preference is an MSU formula. Right now, because Mr Pie buys in bulk, I am using Miracle Grow (please don’t judge me Jen). I have not seen a significant difference in growth or blooming. I subscribe to the weekly weakly method. 1/8 to 1/4 strength each time I water. Once a month I flush the pot to clear away accumulated salts, especially important when using a synthetic fertilizer.
