Pleated leaves on the new growth of my Oncidium Sharry Baby 😕. The pleats are vertical on the leaf. I don’t see any horizontal pleats. What am I doing wrong? I regularly water following the schedule and when I last repotted the plant (a few months ago) the roots were very healthy. The plant is in fresh oncidium bark from Repotme.com and I see new root growth. Moss is only on top of the pot. The bulbs feel firm. I’ve got a little humidity tray too. I don’t open the window by the orchid and it doesn’t get exposed to direct sunlight (west facing window). I don’t mist the plant as I read that doesn’t significantly increase humidity for too long and can cause other problems. Can you provide suggestions to improve growing conditions? Should I unpot it to check the roots or increase water frequency? BTW, I’m using the apps advice for watering schedule.

    I’ve not seen vertical pleating before so this is only a guess. I do see some light horizontal pleating elsewhere on the plant so my guess is plant is mildly dehydrated. But the pseudobulbs are nice and smooth and the pleating is so minor, I wouldn’t worry much about it unless it gets worse or you want to enter it in a competition. I use the Repotme oncidium mix in a ventilated pot topdressed with sphagnum too. And many of my oncidiums have some pleating. I’m considering using unventilated pots next time to see if that helps. If you are very concerned, check your roots. Dehydration is caused by either a too infrequent water schedule or roots issues keeping the plant from taking in water (ie root rot). If you have healthy roots, you could try increasing your watering schedule to see if that helps.

    Thank you. Doing a search on various discussion boards, one person posted that vertical pleats may be due to the leaf sheath being too thick for the growing leaf to emerge from. The horizontal pleats are much more common problem. Before I repotted the plant, it was the in a less ventilated pot, so maybe the switch to a more ventilated pot is contributing to some dehydration? I will check the roots just in case.
