Guys- I need some help with my Maudiae. She is giving me so much trouble compared to my other paphs. Her new fan grew so incredibly tall so quickly, that the new roots all kept coming out above the media and dried out almost immediately. (See the few blackened dots along the stem.) I decided to cut it just below the next root growth points and put the top of the fan in moist sphagnum and encourage root growth from there- it’s worked for me once in the past, and the leggy fan is doing fine. I assumed the plant would somehow sense that there was a crown issue and grow an entirely new fan, as you would expect in the normal growth cycle after a bloom. But it hasn’t. Instead, it’s putting out those two bright green little spikes. I don’t think they are roots as those tend to be a dull yellow or slightly brown, and rounded. These are pointy and green. If they were roots, they would definitely have dried out by this point. If they are new fans, it’s a very weird way for them to emerge- I’ve only ever seen them come from almost below the media, or at the base of the previous fan. Are they keikis? Can Paphiopedilums even get keikis?!? What is this confused Maudiae doing, besides confounding me?

Ooof! My best guess is new fans. Only because this one has been confused about where to push out roots. Maybe the same thing is happening here?

Good morning! Did you figure out what they are? I am burning with curiosity.

Someone in an American Orchid Society group is having the exact same issue, with exact same growth. We’re both perplexed, but leaning toward the idea that they are new fans. Here’s the progress from 6-7 days:

Maybe looking like a leaf formation?

To me it looks like a new fan, but I’ve only had paphs since February 2025, so still learning. One of my Maudiae is doing something similar and pushing out 2 new fans (I presume) simultaneously. The growth does seem to be a little lower on the stem than your growth though. The moist moss is usually on top of the root to keep it from drying out. I plan to repot this one a little lower once it’s done flowering

Yes, that’s where I’ve always had new fans emerge in the past. These are a little weird for sure. I’ll keep updating if anything becomes clear.

What did the growth turn out to be? A new fan or a root?

The bottom one still looks like it’s developing into a new fan, but the upper one hasn’t developed any further.

Definitely a new fan. Still no development from the upper one- which is great. Any roots it would create, would certainly dry out in the air.
