Aloha y’all! So I had orchids last year from my vow renewal and I killed them all. My mother in law was actually able to keep her 2 alive so she gifted them to me. But now I’m scared I’m going to kill them. Originally I transplanted mine and then put them in a greenhouse when the weather got warm. My mil kept hers inside the whole time, never transplanted, and didn’t trim. The roots are busting out of the pot so I desperately want to repot but I’m scared. I wanted to try clear glass pots this time around. In the pics you can see one stem is completely dead too. What should I do? Should I just let them be?

    - You can absolutely cut the brown flower spike. It will not bloom again. - If they haven’t been repotted in a couple years, they could probably use fresh media- stick to bark and sphagnum moss mixes, as they are the most likely for success for new growers. If your environment is dry, use more moss (not tightly compacted,) for more moisture retention. If your environment is very humid, use more bark to retain more air around the roots. Orchids need both, moisture AND airiness around their roots. - It’s a good idea to use a clear pot to repot into. You’ll be able to tell more easily when to water. The roots will be silvery white, and the media dry. If the roots are green- leave it alone for a day or two until the media dries more. - People tend to use clear PLASTIC pots for this, because orchid pots are ventilated, with slits or holes that allow airflow. A regular glass bowl or vase might retain too much water, which will rot the roots. It works in some environments, with super dry conditions but you’d have to really limit the water you’re adding and pay really close attention to the roots to ensure that they are getting enough air. - I highly recommend Miss Orchid Girl on YouTube. She has hundreds of videos, a whole series called ‘orchid care for beginners’ that gives really sound and reliable advice. If you really want to do some maintenance and repotting- she has videos that walk you through it. Watch those before you buy media or pots. Really helpful and may prevent you from making the newbie mistakes we all make. 😉

      Thanks so much for all the info Jen! I really appreciate all the advice and YouTube resource. I originally had used an orchid bark mix and now realize I should have used more moss. I live in central Alabama and since my plants didn’t survive the greenhouse last year I’m going to keep them inside like my mil did since she kept them alive ☺️
