All right you brilliant knowledgeable community, I need your help. This is my incredibly vigorous zygopetalum- the newest leaf from the (blooming) immature growth has all these black spots on it. I suspected they were caused by water trapped in the tight layers of the pseudobulb as it was growing and watered haphazardly in the nursery. The leaf with only a few of these spots had them when I bought the plant- it was then the most recent growth. Then there is the newest growth that *seems* problem free so far. So… for any of you that have dealt with this type of orchid, or these spots before… are they bacterial or fungal? Are they caused from water droplets trapped in the growths? I don’t *think* they are active infections, nor do they seem to be spreading or increasing… but ARE they active? Do I have to treat with a fungicide? 😬 Is it something that’s going to spread to the healthy new growth, or now that I’m caring for it properly, will the new leaves be less unsightly?

You suspicion that they could have been caused by water seems sound. I would watch to see if more spots develop. Have you seen any neighboring plants with similar spots? If more develop, I’d treat with bactericide/fungicide.

Nope- just this plant, and the only spots that are there seem to be the same amount as when the leaves grew- no more developing. Just wanted to know if I should be treating it with anything as that clean new growth develops. Hoping to get ahead of a problem, but maybe it’ll be ok now that it’s not getting showered in a nursery. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Thanks Pi!
