Looking for advice on repotting my orchid. I received my orchid as a gift last year, however hadn’t quite known how to care for it until I got this app! Because of this - it’s never been repotted and the roots look desperate for more space. Does anyone have any recommendations for best pots for orchids? Also best way to repot without shocking or damaging the orchid? I only have my windowsills to store my plants at the moment so I can’t size up too much. Thank you!

Orchids actually like to be crammed a bit. Clear pots are best so you can keep an eye on root health. I actually learned this from the people in this community and recently sized down two of my dendrobiums pots.

The pot it’s in is roughly 4/5 inches wide and clear. Should I keep it in that then? Thank you so much!

Here’s an example of one of mine that is currently blooming. As you can see she’s packed in there pretty good. (Excuse my dirty hands, I’m in the middle of transplanting one of my hibiscus)

Probably should wait until it’s done flowering.

If you got your orchid last year, then it’s probably done flowering, and this is a perfect time to repot. As stated above, a clear pot is an ideal choice so you can keep an eye on the roots. If you wanna put the plastic one in decorative pot, just make sure it has room to breathe. The pot should be very well ventilated as epiphytic orchid roots need to dry between waterings, needing air as much as they need water. While Planta is very handy for lots of things, I wouldn’t necessarily base your watering schedule on what they suggest. It will depend on your medium that you plant in and your environment. Right now it’s probably in a big ball of tightly packed sphagnum moss, which will retain a ton of water for a long time. It is recommended to switch to a bark and spagnum moss mix, which will dry out quicker, but the risk of root rot is much reduced.

Repotme dot com has really great mixes and pots. A little pricey, but quality stuff
