I bought 2 more orchids (the ones with flowers) I have questions. My cat knocked over the purple and white one and the stem with most of the flowers broke off. Will it grow again? Also, ideas on how to make them both continue to bloom. I did give them orchid food the first day I brought them home. Do I do it weekly? Also, the orchid I did have for a few years ago (last picture) is showing signs of improvement since I cute the dead roots off and changed its soil. She’s now growing a new leaf after being dormant for so long. I live in the south so they sit on the screened porch in the summer time because it does get humid here. In the winter, they will move to my sunroom. Any suggestions on how to keep the others blooming and helping my original grow would be very appreciated.

    Phals usually bloom on an annual cycle but there is a way to encourage a second bloom. I personally don’t like doing it because I think the next year’s blooms are fewer in number. The trick to getting most phals to rebloom is light. Bright indirect. If the leaves start to get a red tinge then you know you are at the threshold of too much. Avoid direct sun, especially in the afternoon noon. It will burn the leaves. Some phals require a drop in temperature of around 10 degrees to stimulate blooming. But those tend to be species or simple hybrids. If you get the light right, you’ll probably be fine. Although it can’t hurt to lower the temp if you can manage it. I like the weakly weekly method and dilute between 1/4 to 1/8 strength. I will flush the pots once a month with straight water to help remove salt buildup. And I don’t fertilize when the plant is not in active growth. With fertilizer it’s important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and not exceed the recommended amount. A new leaf is a great sign!
