I repotted this babe on Sunday. Is she done for? :(( I’m knew to plants. I know they’re not meant to last when you keep them in the pot from the store. I fear I might have waited too long to repot her though.

    Umm I don’t think it has any leaves left does it?? If not it’s probably done for. It looks like it may have been a watered too much…

      They fell off yes :( I just followed the instructions of repotting though. Idk 😭 thanks for the input

      So orchids normally are ok in the store bought pot for as long as a year or two though depending on how the sphagnum moss and other materials used in its pot looks (dark and dead versus bright and clear) it’s a good idea to change their medium to boost growth. The biggest thing with orchids is they don’t need to be watered that often, only when their aerial roots (which are also in the growing material) are starting to fade from a moist green to a dryer white, but not so far gone that they’re wrinkled up and dead. Also, orchids should absolutely never sit in water. When you water one, take the transparent pot they came in out of the cache pot, water only around and under the leaves (never on top, water pooling on top of the center of the leaves will rot and kill the plant), and then let the transparent pot completely drain of any excess water before you return the plant to its cache pot. Another option some people seem to favour is the ice cube method which is to put some ice cubes out on top of the moss so it will naturally melt and hydrate the plant. I’m not a big fan because it’s definitely not filling the growth material of the hydration these guys need though, granted, it’s a good starting place!

      Yeah, I’d avoid the ice cube method as it can really damage exposed roots. The vast majority of orchids are tropical plants- none of the orchids in their parentage ever saw ice or freezing temps. It’s just safest to stick to room temp water.

    So if you want to try to save it: i think you overwatered/let it sit in water, so treat it for rot. Find the crown/stem and plant it higher in the soil, so some of the roots are exposed (they can photosynthesize, so letting light hit them will buy you some time while the plant works on new leaves.) Make sure the new orchid bark drains properly and lets the roots breathe and dry properly between watering sessions. Retreat for rot as needed. You'll want to give it some time to heal where the leaves broke off, but after that, give it fertilizer to help it make new growth.
