I impulse bought an orchid vanda blue. Hanging with exposed roots. I have lots of house plants but no experience with these. Any tips to keep it healthy and flowering?

Ooooooo! Nice! Vandas are so lovely. I’ve wanted one for years but don’t have a space that can meet their needs. Check out the AOS. They have good info on care, including a handy cultural requirement sheet. From what I recall, there are a couple of types of vandas, and that will dictate the type of care. In general though, they want LOTS of light and LOTS of water. Where you have it is too dark. At a minimum, it needs to be right next to the window, just out of direct sunlight. Those with plants indoors will move their plant throughout the day to chase the sun. Even then it may be hard to get a vicious plant, let alone a rebloom. Ideally you have an outdoor growing space that is protected with a shade cloth. Or a strong grow light. I think most growers will soak the roots because the lack of media. In the hotter times of the years, you may need to soak them multiple times. The exposed roots is pretty common, but I don’t recall why. Maybe because of the frequency of watering and the roots don’t like to stay wet? And they can big. Yours is pretty large and impressive already😻but I think you can expect more width. I believe they keiki fairly easily. Ooooooooooo, I’m so jealous. You’re gonna have so much fun with this one. Good luck!!!!!

2 Mi piaceSorry to say it but that’ll be dead in a month. You need to be an advanced grower to keep it alive

0 Mi piaceHome growers can totally manage to grow Vandas- you just need to know what their specific needs are. I highly suggest going to Miss Orchid Girl on you tube and watching her videos. She has whole playlists based on types of orchid, I’m sure there’s a vanda one. The extent of my knowledge is high light- lots of effort to hydrate any bare rooted orchid. If you can provide that, you’ll be fine.
1 mi piaceThank you, I feel better for that 😀 I will look it up I have a bucket to drench💦 the roots and focused a grow light 💡 on it after MeasomerPi kind advice. Let’s see if we can make it past a month 🤞
2 Mi piaceNo advice, as I’m a newbie myself, but that’s a beautiful orchid!!! May it have a long happy life in your care!

Hi Andleaf! You got me interested in exploring Vandas and, with some encouragement/enabling from Mr Pi, I’ve picked up one. Well, two. Okay three. I have no impulse control. I wanted to pass along some resources I’ve come across. Bumblebee Orchids on YouTube has some good info on Vanda care. She grows her’s in a souther windowsill so may be relevant to you. I was directed to her by the blog Here But Not, which also has some good info. He also links a YouTube video by Motes Orchids of Florida on orchid growing. I don’t live I Florida but it is full of foundational information that I found very helpful. Of course, Miss Orchid Girl has been helpful too, but it seems she is primarily growing in plastic pots these days, which I’m not planning on doing. Hope your Vanda journey is going smoothly!
0 Mi piaceThank you MeasomerPi, I will check out these resources. What type are your Vandas? Do you have photos?
