Hello! My orchid is healthy, is growing new leaves and has crazy aerial roots. It just started growing a new one. There’s nothing I want more than for it to bloom again but it’s been over a year. Any tips to promote bloom?

I find light is the biggest factor for a healthy bashful bloomer. Phals respond well to bright indirect. A good way to gauge the amount of light your plant is getting is color of the leaves. Dark green means too little light (to bloom). The leaves will turn a lighter green in stronger light (think grass green). In really strong light leaves will begin to redden or purple. If you see that happen, it’s a sign your plant is getting the maximum amount of light it can handle before sunburn. Consider reducing the light slightly. Make sure you gradually transition your plant into brighter light otherwise you run the risk of burning it. And remember phas will not tolerate direct sun. Good luck!

1 gillaIt wouldn’t hurt to cut down the old flower spikes. It’s unlikely you’ll get a second blooming from those if it’s been a year. If you want to promote a new spike, cutting the old ones at the base can help the orchid direct energy into vegetative growth necessary before a new spike emerges. They generally come out of the stem in the space 2-3 leaves down from the crown. If you don’t grow enough new leaves, there is just no place for them to emerge- so you definitely want to encourage those leaves first.
