Hi guys, this is currently my orchid, flowers and leaves fell off a while ago. Never had orchids before, what’s the next step in care? Do they have a time when they don’t flower? Do I need to trim to encourage growth etc. tia x

Yes, it’s normal for flowers to bloom and eventually fade and fall. It’s not a general part of the process for them to then drop a bunch of leaves. One or two of the lower ones may wither off as the plant ages, but this looks like your orchid has experienced something more dramatic. It’s kind of hard to tell from the picture, but is the crown of the plant still green and active? (The top of the plant where the next leaf will emerge on a healthy orchid.) a couple more closer pics may be helpful from another angle. Clip off the flower spikes all the way down at the base of the plant. They are only draining the plant of resources necessary to grow desperately needed new leaves and roots. I would repot. 1) into a clear plastic pot with drainage slits or lots of holes for aeration, epiphytic orchid roots need air just as much as they need water. 2) into bark and sphagnum moss mix, not regular potting soil. 3) trim away any dead roots. The ones that are firm and fleshy are good- any that are papery or mushy are dead. 4) repot and wait. Indirect bright light not full sun would be beneficial, and water only when the medium is dry. Your cue will be when the roots have gone from green to a silvery grey-green color. Do not pour water over the top of your plant, as water that sits in the crown or leaf joints on the stem can cause rot, which is what I suspect you are fighting now. Pour water over just the bark and moss mix. Please keep us posted, it’s so great to hear when a plant has pulled through. And I would encourage you to ask more specific questions as you go.

The lines are where I would cut the flower spikes. The arrow is the crown where new leaves will come from if it’s still healthy. Hard to see down in there without a pic from that angle. If the dried remains of the previous leaves peel away easily, you can definitely gently remove them to get a better look at whether the stem of the plant is in decent condition.
