If you have a phalaenopsis, which most beginners start with, as they are plentiful in stores and probably the easiest to care for, these would be some tips- -bright indirect sunlight or grow light. Not too much direct sun as leaves can and will burn. -you will want to water when the roots are that pretty silvery color, if they are still green, then there’s plenty of moisture still available to them. Orchids are epiphytic and require air around the roots just as much as they need water. Let your orchid guide you as far as how often to water. Your potting medium, the dryness or humidity of your environment, or your individual plant needs may be different from everyone else’s- so saying ‘once a week’ or every 3 days’ is just not going to work. -Having it potted in a clear ventilated inner pot helps with both airflow and being able to see the roots to determine when it’s time to water. -extremely important! Do not water from above your plant. Try to water at the potting mix level. You want to avoid water pooling or moisture getting trapped in the crown of your orchid, or in the crevices of the leaf joints. Sprinkling from above can lead to crown and stem rot. -your blooms will drop eventually. Don’t panic. No flowers bloom eternally. That is a good time to repot a new orchid. A bark and sphagnum mix is always a safe bet and provides both air pockets and moisture retention. When your flowers fall, you have two options. You can cut the flower spike 1/2 inch above the last growth node before flowers started, and hope for a second flush of flowers. Or, and I am a strong proponent of this tactic, you can cut the flowers spike all the way down to the base of the plant. This allows, your orchid a growth period to focus on new leaves and roots, and store up some energy for next year‘s flower spike. -there are plenty more specifics regarding repotting, fertilizing, etc.. But that is the basics.
