Hi what kind of orchid is mine, the store tag says:brasidium golden gamine, a reliable app I use (PictureThis) told me it was a clamshell orchid I want to put it in water culture and I’m looking for guidance on that.

Ok, so a brasidium golden gamine usually looks more like a standard oncidium (or spider orchid…)

1 likeSee the rounded seashell like lip? If you have something similar to the second, it should need a more humid environment, and while I NEVER recommend water culture for orchids, that type would probably survive longer in it than if you had more of a standard oncidium in your plant’s heritage, because the cochleata is from more humid swampy areas.
2 likesThey are both, still, however epiphytic orchids. They grow on trees in nature, with TONS of air around their roots. Water culture is simply not how epiphytic orchids grow. I know there are plenty of people that will tell you it works for them, but long term it’s a really risky move. It’s just not how these plants evolved, and the chances of you rotting the roots are really high. If you are set on it though, I’m sure someone else in the group will have some advice. I would just strongly recommend letting the roots air out and breathe regularly if you attempt. Either way, I’d love to see a picture of your orchid! It sounds like a really interesting hybrid.
2 likesThe water culture I might do is propping it up with wire like a avocado with toothpicks and putting half an inch of water at the bottom of the container, so that its roots barely touch it
0 likesI have a phal orchid in water culture, so I’m not sure how much this will help you, but what I do is keep it two days with the roots 2/3 submerged, one day with just an inch of water on the bottom, and then four days to dry out. Good luck!
